Custom connectors are available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free plans are limited to one custom connector. Claude connects to the server from Anthropic's cloud, so it also works in the mobile apps once added. Steps below follow Anthropic's help article, which is the source if menus have changed: Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP.
Free, Pro and Max
- Go to Customize, then Connectors.
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Enter a name, for example Alter Ego, and paste the URL above. Click Continue.
- Review the detected authentication settings and click Continue. Leave the recommended options as they are.
- Click Add, then sign in and pick your storage (next section).
Team and Enterprise
- An Owner or Primary Owner goes to Organization settings, then Connectors, clicks Add, hovers Custom and selects Web. They enter the name and URL.
- Members then go to Customize, then Connectors, find the connector (usually labelled Custom) and click Connect.
Use it in a chat
Click the + button at the lower left of the chat, choose Connectors and switch Alter Ego on. Connectors are enabled per conversation.
Other MCP clients
Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth can use the same URL. Look for a setting called connectors, tools or MCP servers, add the URL as a remote (HTTP) server and complete the sign-in. Names and menus differ per client, so check that client's own documentation. Support depends on the client and its plan.
Storage setup
When you first connect, you get a page to choose one storage. Sign in with that provider and approve the access shown. You can connect a different storage later with a separate connection.
Alter Ego asks for the narrowest access each provider offers. For OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive that is a single app folder.
OneDrive
Sign in with a personal or a work or school Microsoft account. Alter Ego requests the app folder permission, so it only reaches its own folder, Apps/Alter Ego, in your OneDrive. Some work accounts need an administrator to allow the app first.
Google Drive
Sign in with your Google account. Alter Ego uses the drive.file permission, so it only sees the folder Alter Ego that it creates, and nothing else in your Drive.
Dropbox
Sign in with Dropbox. The app is limited to its own app folder, Apps/Alter Ego.
GitHub
You install the Alter Ego GitHub App and pick the repository during installation. Every change the assistant makes is a commit to that repository, made as you. If more than one repository is reachable, the assistant uses choose_repo to select one.
Azure DevOps
Sign in with your Microsoft account and approve the Azure DevOps access. The memory is a Git repository named alter-ego, or one you pick. Every change is a commit with a message starting "Alter Ego:". If several repositories are reachable, use choose_repo with organization, project and name.
Tools
These are the tools your assistant gets. You rarely call them yourself, the assistant does, but you can ask for them by name.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
start | Loads rules, profile, contexts and playbooks. Called once at the start of every chat. |
open_context | Opens one context: its README and the most recent journal lines. |
log | Adds one journal line to a context after real work. |
remember | Adds a line to your rules, your profile or a context. |
new_context | Creates a context folder for a new client, project or topic. |
list_files | Lists files in your memory. |
read_file | Reads one file. |
write_file | Writes a Markdown, text, CSV or JSON file. Journals only grow, so use log for those. |
choose_repo | GitHub and Azure DevOps only. Picks the repository when several are reachable. |
Tell the assistant things like "from now on answer in Dutch" and it will use remember. Do not store passwords, tokens or other secrets in your memory.
Files and layout
On first use start creates a small set of seed files and tells you where they are.
README.md
rules.md
profile.md
contexts/
acme/
README.md
journal/
2026-10.md
playbooks/
weekly-review.md
Journal files are one per month. Each day gets a heading and each entry a line such as - 09:40 Drafted the reminder. Everything is plain text you can edit by hand.
Use an existing agent-context repository
If you already keep a repository laid out as preferences.md, identity.md, clients/, projects/ and skills/, choose GitHub or Azure DevOps as storage and pick that repository. Alter Ego works with that layout as is, and only certain folders are writable. Your existing files and history are untouched, new changes arrive as normal commits.
Troubleshooting
The assistant does not use Alter Ego
Check that the connector is switched on in the current chat (+ menu, then Connectors). Then ask it to "call start". Connectors are enabled per conversation.
It asks which repository to use
With GitHub or Azure DevOps and several reachable repositories, the assistant needs choose_repo. Give it the repository as owner/name for GitHub or organization/project/name for Azure DevOps.
Sign-in loops or fails
Remove the connector in your client and add it again. On a work account, an administrator may need to approve the app. On GitHub, make sure the app is installed on the repository you want.
A file will not save
write_file accepts only Markdown, text, CSV and JSON files, and journals cannot be overwritten. Use log to add to a journal.
Still stuck
Email sebastiaanboon@cafeboon.com with what you tried and which storage you use. Do not send passwords or tokens.
Disconnect and revoke
Two steps stop Alter Ego completely: remove the connector in your AI client, then revoke access at your storage provider. Your files stay where they are. Menus change over time, so each provider's own help page is linked.
In Claude
Go to Customize, then Connectors, and click Remove or use the three dots menu. On Team and Enterprise, owners remove it under Organization settings, then Connectors. See the Anthropic help article.
OneDrive and Azure DevOps (Microsoft account)
For a personal account, open your Microsoft account privacy page for apps and services that can access your data (account.microsoft.com, Privacy, then app access), find Alter Ego and remove its permissions. For a work or school account, check myapps.microsoft.com, or ask your administrator, who can revoke permission under Enterprise applications in the Entra admin center. Microsoft changes these pages often, so rely on their current documentation if the names differ.
Google Drive
In your Google Account, open the page for third-party apps with account access, choose Alter Ego, select See details, then Remove access and confirm. Google's guide: support.google.com/accounts/answer/13533235.
Dropbox
On dropbox.com click your avatar, then Settings, then Apps, click the arrow next to the app and choose Disconnect. Dropbox's guide: help.dropbox.com/integrations/third-party-apps.
GitHub
Go to Settings, Integrations, Applications. Under Installed GitHub Apps, click Configure on Alter Ego to change repository access or uninstall it. Under Authorized GitHub Apps, click Revoke. To fully stop access, do both. GitHub's guides: installed apps and authorized apps.
Revoking access does not delete your files. Delete the folder or repository yourself if you want them gone.
